The bespoke table tennis table by Silverlining and Katharine Pooley is the ultimate addition to the man cave

Welsh design company Silverlining has literally carved out a niche for itself in the luxury design market. The 70-person firm is based in Wrexham, North Wales, and has reached the upper echelons of contemporary woodworking, building bespoke objects for homes and superyachts, boardrooms and museums.

The company was founded by Mark Boddington, who chose the designer’s life over the brewer’s. His family name may be best known for its bitters, for who knows, an object designed by Silverlining is at the top of its game.

This luxurious table tennis table is a good example of the company’s craft. Designed in collaboration with interior designer Katharine Pooley (opens in new tab)the table was created for a client with a ‘luxury game room’ and combines rare and resistant materials with a meticulous finish.

The most notable component is the hammock, made from bespoke perforated dark green leather. There will be no problems with a flabby middle, nor with rebellious bumps on the pristine playing surface which is formed from eucalyptus veneer and diamond phosphor veneer.

This dark wood is used throughout the table, juxtaposed with satin-brushed brass accents on the edges and marking the game divisions on the top.

On either side of the table is a hidden drawer for storage of clubs and balls, with leather and brass and dark green leather trimmed to match the ‘hammock’. Pooley is a highly regarded interior designer whose work ranges from one-off pieces to ready-to-go ‘wear at home’, where every object, from cutlery to candlesticks, can be designed, furnished and configured.

Every product that leaves the Silverlining workshop (opens in new tab) is unique, and this table is no different. The lines are decidedly more modern than some of his other projects, which often make full use of his in-house sculpting and marquetry skills.

Other recent projects include a ‘World Timepiece Box’ made from Macassar, Santos Rosewood and 24-karat gold, designed exclusively to display and wind a Patek Philippe racing wristwatch. Prices, understandably, are only available on request.
